Style of Radio News

The styles of news programming can relate to many different factors covering all different subjects. The can also relate to the target audience of a radio show. Different kinds of radio styles will have a different type of language they will use depending on their audience. This is so the audience can understand what the Radio stations going on about and it makes it easier to listen to. The stories could relate on the nation scale if it is a national broadcaster. Local community radio stations will often broadcast local news which then will be delivered in a local dialect or often a regional accent so that the viewers will be able to understand. For example salford city news may use certain slang words such as mithering which mean annoying someone. Only people who live in salford/manchester will understand this slang word. Also Wales has there own radio stations where they just speak welsh which only welsh people will understand or people who can speak welsh.

Analysing styles of radio news

·          related to audience;

This is the type of news that the radio station thinks applies to the audience, also it has to be relevant. For example Radio 1 could broadcast that new A-levels are announced by Michael Gove. By this Radio one would broadcast to colleges and universities due to the fact the trending topic is aimed at 16-29 year olds. Due to the target audience the radio presenter would use a certain type of language depending on which radio station it is. For example if Capital broad casted a news story which appealed to 16-29 he would use slang words such as 'innit' or 'loving it'. This is so it makes it easier to listen to for that age range.

·          public service;

This is a type of news report that would be of public intrest, something that the public need to know about. The radio presenter would sit in the radio office and present this piece of news. An example of public service news would be 'war breakout!'. This is an example due to the fact every single person would be affected by this one way or another emotionally or physically. Also the radio presenter would also have to use the appropriate language which would be very aggressive words such as 'war', 'destruction'. This would also tell people this is very serious news that they all should prepare for. This type of news would be broad casted on most radio stations from BBC one, Capital to Key 103.

This is a story about Madeleine Mccan which will apply to the public due to the fact its a fmaous story about a missing child which has reached all over the world. In the news story it goes on about the 'public suuport' whic onse again proves that this is a public service story. Also Madeleine's parents want the publics help in finding there little girl so therefore it applys to the public.

·          commercial;

A commercial news story is usually about a business company such as Sony or Asda. The news about businesses can range from two company's merging into one or a company expanding such as Walmart which transformed into Asda in the UK. Many people benifit from hearing about business news such as former employees and other business bosses so they know what there competitions up to. Commercial news is also used for profit such as advertisements.

Here we hear Harry Styles being interviewed which then leads up to him announcing his new single On way or another. This is for promotional value due to the fact the radio station will know that if they have Harry Styles on their radio channel they will attract more listeners. This is also a way in which bands get to promote their new songs or their up ad coming tours. It also keeps the fans satisfied because they get to learn more information about the band that they might not have heard before.

·          community;

Alot of people can mistake community for also being local however the different between them both is that local would apply to manchester and community would apply to a certain place in Manchester such as Tyldesley. Community news would consist of locals goings on such as a fun fair which is in the area for the day which will inform people and persuade them to attend. Community news would also broadcast news about up and coming shops which are going to be built in the local area. Also local robbings and crimes will be broad casted so people know to stay alert.

·          small-scale;

A independent radio station such as Eccles college would broadcast small scale news. Small scale news is a type of news that isent of mass importance and only applys to certain people. For example if an animal escaped from eccles college and was on the loose around eccles college this would be broadcasted around the college. This therefore would be small scale news due to the fact it wouldnt apply to anybody else apart from the college.

·          local;

Local news is a set of news that applys to the local area such as Manchester. Certain radio stations that are found in that area will broadcast local news so people can stay up to date with whats going on in there local community. For example if there was a a new mayor elected in salford, Salford city radio will broadcast the news to inform people whats going on. BBC Manchester may also broadcast the news giving surrounding people the information.

·          regional;

Regional news would be broadcasted to different regions througout England such as the North West, South and so on. For example 'teachers go on strike in the north west' this therefore would apply to the north west and make it regional news. People from London wont benifit or care about certain news that goes on in the North West which is w the make it regional news.
Heres a example of the teacher strike in the north west  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/10385099/Teachers-strike-bad-for-pupils-and-parents-says-David-Laws.html
 For a radio show the presenter would broadcast throughout the north west and inform people about the strike. Most likely there would be a live cross with a story like this.

·          national;

National news is a set of type of news that applies to the majority of people across Britain. National news would mostly be broadcasted on most radio stations such as Radio 1, BBC 4, Key 104 and capital. an example of national news will be 'UK credit rating down to AA' which will apply to most people. The language for national news will be one that everyone across the country will be able to understand. National news is usually something very big which will effect most the country.

Here is an example of national news which will apply to people all over Britain. The news storys tells us how Gordan Ramsey stated that immigrant workers work harder than British people. This therefor will apply to British workers across the UK, not only that but we find out that politition Boris Johnson also agrees with Gordan which means this topic of converstaion is a very serious one.

Form of Radio News

1.   Analysing forms of radio news

Bulletin

This is a collection of newstories which are broadcasted on Radio and TV at a regular time. A newsbulletin can included many many differet elements such as sports information, weather information, celebrity gossip and may other elements.
This is an example of a news bulletin taken from GMT update talking about Jazeera English and other news around the world.

Depening on the type of news they broadcast they have to put the emotion into the news story. For example the news bullletin I have posted is about terrorisum and therefore is a serious issue. The journalist has a very serious face which tells the viewers hat its a series issue. In the bulletin the news presenter cuts too the journalist who then gets straight to the poing and gives the viewers the most important and interesting information about the issue. This would be similar how the news on the radio would be shown but without the pictures.

Headline

A headline is also know as a head and kind be found at the begining of an article. The headline has to be straight to the point such as 'Man shot dead' and it also has to catch the reader attention. A headline of an article can make up the reaers mind up if they want to carry on reading the article. You can also get closing headlines which are usually found at the end of an article.
Here is an example of a news headline taken from a UFO sighting in America.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emmCuVj_BU8
The headline in this news report is "something strange in the sky" which grabs the readers attention straight away because most people love to know about weird stuff that could be or could not be true. The headline also stays on the newsreport for a great length of time so the viewers can read the headline without thinking. However for a radio show the news presenter would normally read the headline out due to the fact there would be no visual picture for radio.

News Programme

A programme that is dedicated to a news stories. These can be found in radio and in television. An example of a news programme for radio is BBC Radio 4 which relates to the news but dedicates a whole programme to a story and goes into more detail.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03cdzk8

This is a radio news programme from BBC 4 Radio which talks about Britain and the problems it faces. Here we can here the language he uses which is very formal due to the fact its a serious topic hes discussing.

Copy Only

A copy only is where a news reader on the radio or on the television read out a news story/ bulletin. In a copy only theres no interviews conducted or live crosses.
http://player.absoluteradio.co.uk/core/radioplayer/podcasts/Absolute-Radio-News/2013-10-24/20131024125932/
I have found an example which I have taken from Absolute radio which features a copy only example. At 0.32 we hear te radio presenter tells us the story about the NHS, she gives us the most important details about the situation and reads out a quote the medical officer said. This gives us as a viewer a quick insight to whats going on with our local health which plays a massive part in Britain.

 Audio Clips

 An audio clip is a short segment of media which can be seen in audio clips and video clips. An audio clip can be used for many reasons such as promotional or informational. In audio clips the journalist would normally listen back to the news hes recorded and edit it down to the most important part in the news.
http://player.absoluteradio.co.uk/core/radioplayer/podcasts/Absolute-Radio-News/2013-10-24/20131024125932/
This is an example of an audio clip taken from the sports section of the radio news. At 1.28 we here a segment of an audio clip of Ian Wright talking about Football. In this audio clip it points out the most useful information to the audience and doesnt bore us with long details.

       Voicers

      This is seen in alot of radio news reports due to the fact a voicer is an audio report from a radio reporter. A voicer is usally taken from the scene of crime or incident.
http://podcast.canstream.co.uk/scr/index.php?id=20454
In this radio show it cuts to the radios crime correspondent who then gives us information about the Madelin Mccan story. It cuts to him giving us a breif statement about the story giving the audience more information.

Wraps

 A wrap is a broadcasting summery of an evolving issue or the events that have happened that day. In the reports they will draw on material which has already gone on air.

live cross (two way-live and ‘as-live’)

A live cross is when a radio presenter is in a studio and then crosses to a radio correspondent whos at the scene of the crime. This way you can get first hand information about the subject.
